Hellas = Greece

Greek culture, Greek traditions

Greece is called Hellas or Hellada by the Greek people. But since the ancient days they have stopped pronouncing the "H". The question "where does the word Greece come from?" has arisen. The word Greece comes from the Romans. From a Greek colony in Magna Grecia (Sicily and Southern Italy) one of the first Greek groups that the Romans came into contact with. Since these Hellenics lived in a place the Romans called Magna Grecia, they were called Grecians or Greek. The name just stuck. This is simular to the reason why the Germans (ie Deutch) are called Allemand in French

Modern Greek Culture

Greek people love to flirt, but also play "hard to get". They are very friendly, laid back and enjoy the outdoors. Greek food is tasty and healthy. Do you know what the Greek word for "gravy" is? It doesn't exist because Greek food doesn't need gravy.
Greeks make less income and pay higher prices compared to all other European countries. Yet they still manage to go out more to Bouzoukia, Dance clubs (wich are jumping til the sun rises), coffee bars and beaches. Greeks will get drunk in the afternoon at the tsipouro taverna or the ouzeri and still show up for the evening shift at work. Greeks usually arive late to work and leave early. And yet, They still manage to buy a house as a wedding gift for each of their children (isn't that better than a toaster?). I am Greek, and I still don't understand how they do it.
